As a team we are committed to doing exactly what we challenge our clients to do...embracing growth and change. You can read part of our journeys below!
Asking for support can be difficult and intimidating. It’s important to find the right fit between client and therapist. I create a therapeutic environment that is client directed and immediately focuses on the goals that you want to achieve. My agenda is YOUR agenda, and we will move at the pace you desire! I believe everyone’s life is just that… their life and no one else’s. While we often cannot control the cards we are dealt, we can learn to determine and control how we react to them and what decisions we make with them. One of my main goals as a therapist is an intense desire to create a non-judgmental atmosphere where growth, authenticity, and exploration are safe and desirable.
My personal life experiences, education, and career opportunities have provided me with a myriad of perspectives. For more that 10 years, I have conducted therapy for all ages and demographics, with extensive work with adolescents and their families. I also enjoy working with couples and families in conflict, as well as grief/loss, trauma, anxiety, depression, divorce, and parenting concerns. Emotional and Mental Health encompass all of my being, as I believe healthy relationships require emotional maturity and mutual respect.
I grew up in a very small town in Eastern Nebraska, as the youngest of three, and later a blended family and the youngest of eight. I spent most of my childhood outside (with my Siamese cats), riding the school bus, reading books, or coloring. Eventually I got involved in athletics, had a part-time job at Dairy Queen, and spent an exorbitant amount of time with my friends or studying (because I was weird and liked to study.... a lot). I attended Grace University in Omaha, Nebraska and from there, earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I am now a licensed counselor in the state of Colorado, having moved here in 2015. I have 3 children (2 adults and 1 in high school), a son-in-law and a beautiful 10 month old grandson. I am ridiculous and still like to study a lot, play board games, spend countless hours in conversations with my friends, and get out into nature.
My personal Christian faith influences my life choices and perspectives. If you desire to integrate this aspect into your therapy sessions, that is always an option. If you do not, rest assured that I and Sanitas Journey are respectful of all ways of life and would love to join you on YOUR journey.
In my childhood, I was described as an adventurous thrill seeker. I grew up in Evergreen, Colorado, and was blessed with the opportunity of playing outdoors. Today I still enjoy exploring the outdoors through hiking, paddle-boarding, and biking. With all the adventures outside, I have fallen many times. And with all the times I have been down, I have learned that it takes the support from others to help me back up. In the times of the most traumatic events, it is the individuals around you supporting you that raise you up.
I have a passion and drive for working in a career where everyday I get to work with families. That started in 2010 with me accepting a position at Turning Point Center for Youth and Family Development as a Behavioral Coach. That was where I discovered this is the field where I can support families in need and meet a purpose in my life. While gaining the experience at Turning Point, I received my Bachelor of Science from CSU with the degree of Human Development and Family Studies. In May of 2016, I stepped into a new career as a Child Protection Social Caseworker for Larimer County. It was this opportunity that I learned the most about how to support families by utilizing Motivational Interviewing Skills, Solutions Focused Conversation Skills, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Trauma Informed Care Practices. In 2018, I accepted a position as a Chaplain at Denver Rescue Mission, Harvest Farm Rehabilitation. It was an honor to work with men striving to be independent. There I completed my Certification Addictions Specialist and also trained counselors in addiction therapy. Now I am very excited to begin this new opportunity to continue to grow, teach, and walk alongside all.
If I am not working, I am probably with a friend, cooking, leading youth group, or training for the Tough Mudder.
As a trauma-informed therapist, I welcome you into a safe and supportive therapeutic environment. I will meet you where you are. During sessions you’ll experience compassion, understanding, and empowerment. You can gain an understanding of what trauma is and learn coping strategies to address trauma symptoms. When you are ready and prepared, I will help you process your trauma and walk with through your healing process.
I use assessments to develop an understanding of the experiences you have endured and then work with you to develop a treatment plan, which becomes the road map for therapy. Throughout the therapy process I use active listening, psycho-education, calming exercises, and empowerment through self-reflection.
My foundation as a clinician is in person-centered. I subscribe to the core conditions of therapy, which are genuineness, unconditional positive regard (acceptance and respect), and accurate empathic understanding. To those I add evidence-based trauma modalities. For adults I implement EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). For children and adolescents, I implement TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
With a Master’s of Counseling from Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri, I began working as an addictions counselor and then obtained trauma-informed and EMDR training. I have experience in community-based agencies, CAC/Rape Crisis Center (child advocacy center), and private practice with a focus on addiction and trauma in adults and children. I have provided therapy in various settings, such as residential, out-patient, home, office, and telehealth.
I believe therapy is driven and paced by the client, and that everyone is deserving of healing. During training in anti-racism, I became more aware of cultural barriers and privileges that exist and hinder healing processes, therefore, I take steps daily to be an ally and educate not only myself but also my family on ways to become an ally for POC and LGBTQ identifying people.
